Poetry Tiles

Iris Millward

Open Studios venue 6

I use clay as a medium to carry poetry so that it can be a constant visual presence in our lives. Tiles can be used for walls, floors, parts of furniture, 'read-as-you-go' footpaths and fountains - "a thing of beauty" either indoors or out in the garden.

Each tile is unique, made individually by hand and decorated with words. Most of the tiles are inlaid, a process in which I carve the pattern in the clay while it is still wet. This technique has been used since Roman times to make patterned floor tiles.

Tile making introductory workshops are held between April & August. No experience with art or clay necessary!

Willow Baskets

Gwen Attwood

Open Studios venue 7

I make a variety of sizes and shapes in basketry, from log baskets to tiny blackberry baskets. The willow is grown in my field outside Harberton. It is a satisfying ecological process to grow, harvest, store and soak the withies and weave them into useful rustic baskets with the natural colours of the different willow varieties intact.
