HSSG - the next HSSG meeting at Eunice Lucas’ studio (Woodcourt Rd) is on Mon. 19th May (from 8pm). All villagers/new ideas very welcome. Sponsorship – many thanks to Clive and Susan Gauntlett for their kind sponsorship of this edition of Village Life. Their generosity has enabled us to print and distribute 400 free copies of the newsletter. If you’d like to sponsor an edition (it costs £20) please get in touch with Graham Clayton (732603). St Peter’s Church services for next four weeks: Church coffee morning – Tue. 20th May (10.30) in the Village Hall. Raffle, bring & buy, produce, cakes. Everyone welcome. Contact Marcia Ball (732739). For more church news and views see the Parish News magazine. P.C.C. lottery – why not join the church lottery and help the fundraising for St Peter’s church? It only costs £1 per month and there is a monthly draw. April’s winners: St Peter’s Church Flower Festival (27th - 29th Jun.) – do you have some time over these three days? We need help with refreshments or stewarding and it would take a couple of hours. Also, contributions of cakes would be most helpful. The church will be open every day from 10.30am to 5pm. Planned programme: Mobile Library – the Teignmouth mobile library visits H/ford on Thu. 1st, 15th & 29th May. It stops at the church from 2.15 to 2.40pm and in Bow Rd (2.45 to 3.45pm). Fridge or freezer wanted – if anyone can loan or donate a fridge or freezer to this year’s Fordstock, please contact Steve Woollett (732668). Most of the facilities and the music are sorted out and the committee is looking forward to another successful day on Sat. 12th Jul. Key contact is Simon Wishy (732988). Zebra Action Group (ZAG) – are you concerned about the siting of our zebra crossing? Do you think it’s unsafe? Should we have a pelican crossing instead? Peter Beamish (732476).is organising a meeting at the village school on Fri. May 2nd (7pm) to discuss these matters. There are also plans to stage a village protest at the crossing on Sat. 3rd May (10am). If you can’t attend either event, but support the idea, you could complete a survey/petition. Please collect one from the shop/pub/filling station. Contact Peter for more info. Pub quiz – many thanks from HSSG to Paul for arranging April’s quiz, which raised important funds for us. The next quiz at the village pub, in aid of the Badminton Club, is on Fri. 2nd. May (from 8.45). Village Hall refurbishment - the Village Hall committee is delighted (and relieved) that at long last the kitchen extension has a roof! Our apologies to our regular users as the delays have forced the hall to be out of use longer than expected. Now the builder is cracking on, breaking through into the main hall and revamping the toilets. There are pictures on the village notice board and you can read more about what is happening on the village website. With completion on the (distant) horizon we are thinking about how to celebrate this new and versatile facility – all ideas and suggestions welcome. Regards, Sue Groom (732462). Jazz at the village pub – the Fred Legg Quintet will now be appearing at the village pub on the second Wednesday of every month. So their next booking is Wed. 14th May (from 8pm). For more details ring Fred on 732088. Cricket – sadly Harberton CC’s first two fixtures of the season were lost to the weather, but fingers crossed for a start soon. The club is now running three youth sides and all of them are looking forward to their busy fixture lists. If you’re interested in joining HCC, in a playing or non-playing capacity please contact in the first instance, Bob Mucklow on 847812. Ave Maria!! – two concerts of choral and instrumental music performed by local cathedral choristers (with special guest soloists): Half marathon – villager Elaine Peeke is running a half-marathon (her second) in Plymouth on Sun. 25th May. She’s raising funds for the village school and its pre-school. If you’d like to like to sponsor Elaine go to www.justgiving.com/elaine-peeke or phone her on 732932. H/ford Football Club – the end of season presentation night is on Fri. 30th May at the clubhouse (from 7.30). The club is planning some whist drives soon. Watch this space. Nature reserve – thanks to Tim Wilkins and all those members who turned out for the first working party on 30th Mar., when an area of self-sown alder and willow were cleared to open up views of the far scrape. A meeting on site for group members is being arranged for Sun. 1st Jun. to look at established fauna and flora. Many thanks to Paul and those at the pub quiz which raised £100 for the group as well as providing a stimulating and enjoyable evening. Anyone interested in joining the group or wanting further information, please contact Geoff Broom 731097. Village Local History Society – following the item in last month’s newsletter, some interest has been expressed in a local history society. There are lots of possibilities – not least an oral history of the village compiled from villagers who’ve lived here for all or most of their lives. In addition, the village has an interesting industrial and agricultural history and these could be explored. If this proposal appeals to you, Geoff Broom (731097) is happy to organise an inaugural meeting. Harbourne Shuttle – there has been a great response to the recent pleas for more volunteers and the Shuttle committee is pleased to report that eight new drivers have been taken on in the past three months. So the immediate future of the service is much improved. Mind you, more volunteers are always welcome. If you’re interested please call Brian Lawrence on 732092. Village allotments – the parish council has expressed its support for the village’s search for allotments. Frances Padfield (732962) is the key contact for this interest group. Sunday lunch - how about a Sunday roast lunch at the pub? You need to book (by Friday) and Paul is also happy to cook evening meals (again with 48 hours notice). Phone 732906. Dartmouth Art Weekend – this year’s event (in aid of Children's Hospice South West) is on Sat. 21st & Sun. 22nd Jun. (10am- 4pm). As in previous years, there will be about 30 artists, sculptors, photographers and other artists, displaying their talents in gazebos in the Royal Avenue Gardens. The aim is that the public can watch, and talk to, the artists while they work. Lots of visitors are anticipated and local press, TV and radio have been invited. For more details contact ASAP Liz Roe at Gull Cottage, Bayards Cove, Dartmouth TQ6 9AT or Sue Tweed at sue@tweed50.freeserve.co.uk Flower Show 2008 – why not get involved? Your mantelpiece laden with trophies would lighten those long winter nights….. This year’s show is not far away now (Sat. 2nd Aug.) and this is your last chance to suggest different classes for it. All ideas to the committee, and in particular Bob Monaghan at 10 Marl Park. The number of entries last year was encouraging and the committee is very keen to stimulate even more interest this time around.
