Issued Thursday, 16 July 2009
Devon & Cornwall Police have requested the Parish Council to ask members of the public to take particular care in securing their property, especially during the summer months. In warm weather we’re all tempted to pop out without securing windows and doors. We are also inclined to leave garden sheds and garden equipment unsupervised. At this time of year there are also people around who we don’t know. Usually they are innocent and welcome visitors – but there are also strangers looking for an opportunity to steal. Be vigilant!
We are further reminded to put valuables in the boot of our car when parking. Of course, please ensure that any animals are not left – a car can become a death-trap in a very short time.
Don’t forget to report anything unusual or possibly criminal on 08452 777444, use their website links on www.devon-cornwall.police.uk or contact our Totnes West Neighbourhood Policing Team – specifically PC Gary Addelsee. The emergency number is 999 – don’t be afraid to use it.
The message from the Police is for all of us to KEEP HOUSES AND OUTBUILDING LOCKED AND MAKE SURE ANY EQUIPMENT IS SECURE. WHEN LEAVING YOUR CAR PUT VALUABLES IN THE BOOT AND MAKE SURE YOU DON’T LEAVE ANIMALS INSIDE FOR MORE THAN A VERY SHORT PERIOD.
HARBERTON PARISH COUNCIL
You have, no doubt, heard of Police resources being stretched to unprecedented limits due to funding difficulties. Our area is no exception to the trend and our local PC has been posted away to other duties.
The Parish Council, along with other PCs in the district are taking the issue to the highest levels and have written to the Chief Constable expressing our concerns.
In the meantime, Harberton and Harbertonford are under the care of officers based in South Brent and PC Jacqui Hopper attended the May Parish Council meeting to give details of crime in the area (fortunately low) and staffing at South Brent. PC Hopper is assisted by PC Debbie Taylor and two support officers, PCSO Vicky Gummer and another who is still undergoing training.
PC Hopper gave the following advice to help foil criminals, especially opportunists, and keep your property safe. Ensure that outbuildings, sheds and garages are always locked; Security mark all power tools and garden equipment, especially high value items such as ride-on mowers; Never leave windows open or doors unlocked when away from home; Make sure your house is secure if you are working in the garden; Tell neighbours when you are going to be away from home on holiday or business.
If you need the Police for routine and non-urgent matters, ring them on 08452 777444.
For urgent assistance, to report suspicious activities or alert the Police to crimes in progress, call 999 without hesitation.
Don’t be afraid to contact the Police and please remember that all information given is CONFIDENTIAL!
HARBERTON PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council has again received complaints from residents in Harbertonford about an increase in dog fouling.
Areas of particular concern are the Ford area, Bow Road between Marl Park to Old Road, the road to the Village Hall and Woodcourt Road.
It is the responsibility of owners to ensure that any mess their dogs make is removed and deposited in a safe and hygienic manner.
Please remember that dog faeces are a potential health hazard – especially to children. It’s also against the law and the Council has alerted the South Hams District Council’s Dog Warden to the situation.
Consider others and do the right thing …
CLEAN UP!
